I believe the child is an example of all the negative and evil that goes on everyday behind the scenes in order for everyone to be happy or to live comfortably. The author explains this by using the child that is kept in the basement in order to provide happiness to everyone else. Another example I believe the author shows us just how cruel and evil the reality of how people will put their happiness in front of someone elseРІР‚в„ўs happiness, as long as everyone is doing the same thing. This shows that the ones who walk away from it all couldnРІР‚в„ўt or felt that it was wrong to live like that and didnРІР‚в„ўt want to face the cold hard truth of why they call it the city of happiness. The ones who walk away see what the reality actually is, what the cost of being happy living there means. The author says РІР‚СљAt times one of the adolescent girls or boys who go to see the child does not go home to weep or rage, does not, in fact, go home at allРІР‚Сњ. One example the author perceives the characters terrible justice of reality in this story is the ones who walk away from omelas. The author portrays this of having everything you want or need to be happy with the exceptions of the cruel reality breathing down their necks in the short story by using examples through the characters. That reality is cruel, and no matter how much you argue with reality, it will always win. This shows to me that no matter how perfect everything is or seems like in the world, there will always be pros and cons to everything. I believe the author sums up a whole lot of what this short story is about in this quote. I think the unknown outcome is not ambiguous. The author says the Omelas story does not provide a convincing argument to leave because of Le GuinРІР‚в„ўs ambiguity.

Following these thoughts, I would say, through distractions we are neglecting our potential or power.Our personal potential and power is the very thing we fear most.To achieve it we have to walk away from our distractions (addictions) to and of the temporal world.I also disagree with the essay on another point. What does a РІР‚ВchildРІР‚в„ў mean to us? To me it is potential leading to power. Something is forgotten, neglected and abused. So while we are haring about, right in front of us something is suffering in a miserable and distorted way. But letРІР‚в„ўs not think it is a real РІР‚ВchildРІР‚в„ў. These distraction leads to passivism and complacency.So, letРІР‚в„ўs say while we are achieving our linear goals, there is a suffering child. We nonetheless try to РІР‚ВcollectРІР‚в„ў happiness through distraction РІР‚вЂњ shopping, getting things, activities, РІР‚Вfalling in loveРІР‚в„ў, friends, media РІР‚вЂњ organising the temporal world with temporal busy-ness. We hope for happiness and we strive for it, and we mostly think that we are not yet experiencing РІР‚ВutopiaРІР‚в„ў. the one suffering child is as far away from ours as the author may think. But letРІР‚в„ўs see if I can argue this successfully.Firstly, I disagree with the essay. I personally think utilitarianism is a confounded business.
